As far as image are concerned, I also resize them with tools like picnik since they improve overall pageload time and latest Google updates really wants lighter pages than pages that take too much tile. Picnik can lower size from 500 kb to 15 kb sometime!!

Another benefit of the ALT tag is that it helps in the duplicate content issue…
Since Google won’t be able to read the image, and your site can be image based, adding those ALT text can help to add some unique text to the page so google would consider it unique.

There is a plugin called SEO friendly images, it makes your job easier by automating the whole process. I think it would be useful for many.
