I have some sites using WP-Spamfree alone because it cannot use Akismet anti-spamming services due to hosting limitation(free hosting disables important function like fopen), and Wp-Spamfree seems can only detect around 50% to 70% of total spam.

The rest of the spam did clutter in the comments under moderation section.

I have also some sites that are both using WP-Spamfree and Akismet and it looks like they are the most effective corrective action when used to stop comment spam. Only 1% of spam did go through “comments under moderation”, the rest of the spam is blocked.

I recommend that if you have a paid hosting account, you should be using both WP-Spamfree and Akismet together and update them when an update is available.

Well, these are quite good plugins to avoid spam and it’s a problem for every blog owner and not only Wordpress blogs, those who’re tired of spam also gets them moderated but it’s also not much of help because you’ve to manually delete each and every comment so it’s better to get a filter for spam and get those comments filtered out which doesn’t contribute to the site in any way! It’s a tough job running a blog, but a couple of checks I saw like adding a 10-20 seconds limit feature on comment box, it will not let you comment before 10-20 seconds you spent on the page or if you do your comment won’t be posted. Such checks helps.

recapcha is always a good option to avoid spam.

but I still go for manual check of the administrator or a quality checker.
that is why I have my admin task to do comment moderation.
